ABINGTON TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT TO BRING FIRE SAFETY HOUSE
TO AREA SCHOOLS FOR LESSONS ON FIRE PREVENTION AND SAFETY THIS SPRING

ABINGTON – Youngsters throughout Abington Township will learn some important fire prevention tips when the Abington Township Fire Department’s (ATFD) Safety House stops by their schools this spring with Fire Prevention Specialists John Lewis, Al Neavil, Howard Williams, and Bob Williams.

The inside of the Safety House is designed to look like a home, complete with a kitchen stove and other appliances, and can be used to demonstrate the importance of safety tips like keeping towels and other flammable materials away from the stove and turning pot handles to the side to avoid burns. Theatrical smoke can also be used in the Safety House to simulate a fire, and students will learn how to stay low and crawl to an exit window to safety. They will also be able to place a 911 call to an ATFD volunteer who will act as a dispatcher.

“The ATFD fire Safety House is a hands‐on way to teach our youngsters the importance of fire prevention – it allows them to be involved in the lesson and learn by doing,” said John Lewis, ATFD Fire Prevention Specialist. “These types of demonstrations are effective at helping young people to prevent and respond appropriately to emergencies.”

The ATFD will make stops at schools including St. Luke’s, Highland Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School, Rydal East Elementary School, Copper Beach Elementary School and Roslyn Elementary School throughout April and May. For details about the times and dates, please contact the ATFD’s Community Service Specialist Jeff Glynn at (267) 536‐1055.

The ATFD is an all‐volunteer force made up of five fire companies all operating within Abington Township. The five companies that form the ATFD are Abington, McKinley, Weldon, Edge Hill, and Roslyn. The service area is made up of approximately 15 square miles of Abington Township and is comprised of residential, commercial, educational, medical, light industrial, and other suburban properties. The ATFD serves approximately 56,000 residents.

The ATFD headquarters is located at 1176 Old York Road in Abington. For more information, call (267) 536‐1055 or visit AbingtonFD.org.
