ABINGTON TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT FIREFIGHTERS HONORED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS
DURING TOWNSHIP’S FEBRUARY 3, 2010 PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING

ABINGTON – The Abington Township Public Safety Committee took time to honor the achievements and contributions of a number of Abington Township Fire Department firefighters at its Feb. 3rd meeting.

New Edge Hill Fire Company Chief Frank Schuck was sworn in as the first order of business. He is the company’s ninth chief and has been a member of Edge Hill since 1986. Chief Schuck’s former titles include that of lieutenant, captain and deputy chief.

He succeeds Fire Chief Charlie Rohrer, who was also honored at the Feb. 3rd meeting for his many years of service. Rohrer, who joined Edge Hill in 1972, will continue to serve as the company’s safety officer and vice president. He was presented with a plaque commemorating his contributions to the fire department.

Along with these two individuals, nine students who graduated from the ATFD’s Firefighter I program were recognized for the many hours of work necessary to become certified. The students had to complete 150 hours of training, take written exams, demonstrate skills, and participate in a “live burn” event at the ATFD training facility in order to graduate from the program. The students have studied a wide variety of topics, such as ventilation practices, fire extinguisher training, fire hose perations, ladder work, vehicle rescue techniques and hazardous materials awareness training.

The graduates who were honored include Christopher Platz, Alex Seweryn, Mark Hood, Michael Dalton, Jack Guntz, Monica Hobgood, Jeffrey Holland, Gerard Martin Jr., and Ben Walker. Each graduate received a Certificate of Commendation from the Abington Township Board of Commissioners during the Feb. 3rd ceremony.

The ATFD is an all‐volunteer force made up of five fire companies all operating within Abington Township. The five companies that form the ATFD are Abington, McKinley, Weldon, Edge Hill, and Roslyn.
