ABINGTON TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT TO OFFER CHANGE OF PACE FOR
WALKERS/RUNNERS IN THE 24 – HOUR RELAY CHALLENGE EVENT MAY 30

ABINGTON – Visitors to the 24-Hour Relay Challenge being held at Memorial Field in Abington will have the chance to dress up in firefighting equipment, chat with volunteer firefighters and learn more about the Abington Township Fire Department (ATFD) on Saturday, May 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The ATFD will have a tent set up at Memorial Field and Relay Challenge participants and other visitors are being invited to stop by to try on helmets, boots, jackets and other firefighting gear, as well as visit with the volunteers who serve the department. The ATFD is made up of five separately chartered fire companies: Abington, McKinley, Weldon, Edge Hill and Roslyn. Approximately 235 volunteers belong to the department and dedicate their time and energy to keeping the community safe.

“We look forward each year to participating in the 24-Hour Relay Challenge since it gives us a chance to meet the community members we serve in a friendly atmosphere,” said Dave Schramm, Fire Services Administrator. “Events like this give us the perfect opportunity to educate the public about fire prevention, display our fire apparatus and equipment, and have the opportunity to recruit new members.”

Also on hand at the event will be the ATFD mascot, an inflatable costumed firefighter named “BOOTS”  and various rescue vehicles owned by the ATFD’s five fire companies. Families are welcome to stop by the ATFD tent to observe, interact and learn more about firefighting and fire prevention.

The 24-Hour Relay Challenge is a drug-free, alcohol-free, smoke-free, violence-free unique event that brings together all segments of the Abington community.  Memorial Field is located on the corner of Huntingdon Road and Susquehanna Road in Abington.
